A much simpler example is this one: A = bh.

This is a formula for the area of a rectangle. You may remember that the area of a rectangle is base times height.

So in this formula A is area, b is the base length and h is the height.

Then for a rectangle with b=5 and h=6 the area will be A = 5x6 = 30.

This is called substitution: you substitute the numbers 5 and 6 into the formula A = bh and work out A.

Similarly, if the formula is X = ab + c

and you are given a=2, b=3 and c=5,

then X = 2x3 + 5 = 6 + 5 = 11.

Remember ab means a x b, and remember that you always do multiplication before addition and subtraction (so if you had X = c + ab you would still multiply a by b first and then add c).
